چکیده

The lengthy period since the Apollo landings limits present-day engineers attempting to draw from the experiences of veteran Apollo engineers and astronauts in the design of a new lunar lander. In order to circumvent these limitations, content analyses were performed on the voice transcripts of the Apollo lunar landing missions. The analyses highlighted numerous inefficiencies in the design of the Apollo Lunar Module displays, particularly in the substantial use of the cognitive resources of the Lunar Module Pilot in the performance of low-level tasks. The results were used to generate functional and information requirements for the next-generation lunar lander cockpit. Developing Lunar Access 3

In-Space Operations: Developing a Path to Affordable, Evolutionary Space Exploration

This paper explores alternative options for future human spaceflight programs which meet the goals of the Vision for Space Exploration and the Augustine Commission, within achievable cost and time limits. Based on four decades of NASA experience in on-orbit operations, an architecture is developed that allows access throughout cislunar space, including the surface of the Moon, through the use o...

Biological contamination studies of lunar landing sites: implications for future planetary protection and life detection on the Moon and Mars

Chemical and microbiological studies of the impact of terrestrial contamination of the lunar surface during the Apollo missions could provide valuable data to help refine future Mars surface exploration plans and planetary protection requirements for a human mission to Mars. NASA and ESA have outlined new visions for solar system exploration that will include a series of lunar robotic missions ...

Preliminary Infrastructure Development for Altair Sortie Operations

NASA’s Exploration Systems Architecture Study (ESAS) report envisions humans returning to the Moon in the 2020 timeframe. However, many factors still need to be addressed in depth. They include site selection, materials, and design of inhabitable and survivable infrastructure elements. One of the most important issues dealing with a manned return mission to the Moon is lunar dust. Dust suppress...

Remote detection of widespread indigenous water in lunar pyroclastic deposits

Laboratory analyses of lunar samples provide a direct means to identify indigenous volatiles and have been used to argue for the presence of Earth-like water content in the lunar interior. Some volatile elements, however, have been interpreted as evidence for a bulk lunar mantle that is dry. Here we demonstrate that, for a number of lunar pyroclastic deposits, near-infrared reflectance spectra ...
